Rae Spoon

Artist Rae Spoon has short bright yellow hair and is wearing a collared black lace shirt. They are photographed against a peach background while looking thoughtfully into the distance. Rae Spoon is framed by a purple border with “Yes Indeedy (I do) Music Festival Friday 17 May Saturday 18 May 2024” written at the top and the image of a green and brown coniferous tree to the left.

Rae Spoon is a musician, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and author. They have released twelve solo albums (Coax Records) spanning folk, country, indie rock, and electronic genres and published three books (Arsenal Pulp Press). Rae has been nominated for two Polaris Prizes, a Lambda Literary Award, and a Western Canadian Music Award. They have toured internationally (Canada, Europe, the USA, Australia, China). Rae is a non-binary, trans artist who lives with multiple disabilities.Their most recent album, Not Dead Yet (2023), was written about their lived experience of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and complications.

Rae has a passion for supporting access for under-represented artists through industry, through advocacy, workshops, mentoring, grant writing, project management and music production. In 2015, Rae founded Coax Records in the hopes of using their experiences to create more space in the music industry.

Rae Spoon is an uninvited guest and settler with European ancestryon stolen land. They were born and grew up on Treaty 7 territory in Mohkínsstsisi/Calgary (the traditional and ancestral territory of the Blackfoot Confederacy: Kainai, Piikani and Siksika as well as the Tsuu T'ina Nation and Stoney Nakoda First Nation). Rae currentlylives between Tkoronto/Toronto (the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples) and Tiohtià:ke/Montréal (the unceded Indigenous lands of the Kanien’kehá:ka/Mohawk Nation)

Anne Hedonia

A black and white photo of artist Anne Hedonia who is smiling and kneeling in the grass while holding an autoharp in the crook of their left arm. To their right is a black and white dog laying down in the grass with its front paws outstretched. In the background is a body of water, followed by some trees and then a city skyline. The photo of Anne Hedonia is framed by a blue border with “Yes Indeedy (I do) Music Festival Friday 17 May Saturday 18 May 2024” written at the top and the image of a green and brown coniferous tree to the left.

Anne Hedonia has been anhedonic throughout the ongoing pandemic, but will come out of hiding to sing some rusty songs for a special friend like Rae.

Harris McSheffery

In this photo, artist Harris McSheffery is playing his guitar while smiling at the camera. In the background is a picturesque scene of Sackville’s Waterfowl Park; A bright blue sky, a tall birch tree and part of the park’s wooden boardwalk can be seen. The photo is framed by a plum-coloured border with “Yes Indeedy (I do) Music Festival Friday 17 May Saturday 18 May 2024” written at the top and the image of a green and brown coniferous tree to the left.

Harris is a Fredericton-born, Sackville local. He has played piano since age 9, guitar since teenage- hood, and picked up other instruments along the way, such as harmonica, recorder, and melodica. From 2012 to 2016, Harris studied for a Mount Allison University Bachelor of Music degree, then in Summer 2016, he went to Open Sky Cooperative to learn life skills. Soon after getting to Open Sky, he performed an original composition written for Sackville Citizens Band and amplified harmonica — called “Band Together” — at a 2016 Remembrance-Day-themed concert.

Cutting his teeth over the last 7 years busking at the Sackville Farmers’ Market has led to a series of performing opportunities: Open Mics for Thunder & Lightning, Jazz Standards with Paul Jensen at the Sackville Chalk Art Festival, and a mix of originals and covers at the Riverview High School Diversity Festival, and even SappyFest in 2022. He also performed near the Struts Gallery in 2023 and volunteered for SappyFest that same year. Between composition and performance, he also enjoys improvising in odd tunings on guitar, as demonstrated by his Altered Tuning Challenge on YouTube, since 2020, inspired by such musical luminaries as Joni Mitchell and Sonic Youth.

Recently, Harris McSheffery has expanded his career into Bandcamp album releases, such as “Cherished Moments” and “Fourth-ful”. His latest album, “Short, Sweet, and Surreal” can also be found on his Bandcamp page. He also enjoys making eclectic collage art, which also shows in many of his album covers. His musical approach is similarly varied, with a combination of jazz improvisation, fingerstyle guitar chord-melody, video-game-music-inspired catchiness, and multi-track overdubs to flesh out his sound-worlds. Sometimes, he incorporates microtonality to push the boundaries of harmony and melody in his studio work. From time to time, Harris McSheffery enjoys covering other artists' music, from Classical to Jazz to Rock, sometimes with grungy vibes, sometimes with easy listening contemplation / relaxation vibes.

Fiver

Artist Simone Schmidt is standing amongst dry cattails on the edge of a marsh. They are looking contemplatively to their left. A poem book is tucked into the right pocket of the dark denim chore coat that they are wearing. Simone is framed by a grey border with “Yes Indeedy (I do) Music Festival Friday 17 May Saturday 18 May 2024” written at the top and the image of a green and brown coniferous tree to the left.

Simone Schmidt has been writing songs, playing music and producing recordings for 17 years, fronting country act One Hundred Dollars (2007-11), psych rock unit The Highest Order (2011-2017), solo project Fiver (2012 – ongoing), and chopped electronic duo Splitter. Schmidt’s recordings have 4 times been nominated for the Polaris Prize (“Forest of Tears” 2008, “Lost the Plot” 2012, “Audible Songs From Rockwood” 2017 and “Fiver with the Atlantic School of Spontaneous Composition” 2020).

Schmidt’s musical collaborations are diverse and wide ranging; writing with punks Fucked Up and Bluegrass veteran Chris Coole; producing for singer songwriter Ansley Simpson and creating their latest full length with improvisational unit The Atlantic School of Spontaneous Composition (Bianca Palmer, Jeremy Costello and Nick Dourado). Their songs have been covered by musicians far and wide, including USGirls and Stripmall Ballads. They appear as a guest vocalist on a number of records, including Doug Paisley, Kristine Schmitt, Saltwater Hank, Tasseomancy and The Wooden Sky. They have produced original works for film , including Chelsea McMullan’s “World Famous Gopher Hole Museum”, Brett Story’s “Land of Destiny” and Gillian McKercher’s “Circle of Steel”. In July of 2022, Schmidt released “The Joe Wallace Mixtape”, the soundtrack to Sara Wylie’s hybrid documentary “A More Radiant Sphere” on You’ve Changed Records.

Steve Haley / Klarka Weinwurm

Klarka Weinwurm and Steve Haley are two Sackville musicians who usually do their own thing, but every now and again, the swamp aligns and the two friends perform together. Their songs are beautifully stripped down to their bare bones, exposed for all to see, shakey and vulnerable.

Weird Lines

Weird Lines
might fall apart
over antiquated expressions
and guitar parts that don’t make any sense
Weird Lines
were alive in the fifties
reading about starlings
sleepless, in the middle of the night
a film noir protagonist at the end of the film
who has a few visible scars
the last record had a broken collarbone
maybe you know someone who was in that band
Weird Lines might not know what they are doing here
but mishearing a line is usually better than the original
either way
(hands up)
the lines are
just too good.
